One Expert Predicts — Everyone is Replacing Their HVAC System This Year!

2020 has already been quite an interesting year so far! But one expert, the CEO of Service Nation (the nation’s largest organization for private contractors), predicts that 2020 is a year that many HVAC systems will need to be replaced.

How does this CEO, Matt Michel, know this, and what does it mean for you?

Well, Matt used official shipping data from the AHRI (Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute), which is an association of manufacturers.

He noticed that there were almost 600,000 more installations in 2004 than there were in 2003.

You may already be able to see why this means that 2020 is a year that so many people are going to need to consider a system replacement…

That’s because, 15 years after 2004 is 2019, and HVAC systems have approximately a 15-year lifespan.

However, Matt noticed that the amount of HVAC systems replaced in 2019 was not as high as expected. In fact, sales of new systems were the same in 2019 as they were in 2018.

So this means that there are many, many 15-year-old systems that haven’t been replaced yet — hundreds of thousands of them — that are unfortunately just waiting to break down.

You may be wondering if these systems really need to be replaced, why haven’t they been replaced yet, or why haven’t they broken down already?

Both of these questions can be answered by explaining the summer of 2019. It was a relatively cool summer last year, and most areas of the country didn’t get too hot until August. That’s nice for us, and it’s nice for our HVAC systems too because our A/C doesn’t have to work so hard!

However, having an “easy” summer gave the deceptive appearance that our old, aging, system is working just fine…

So, this CEO is predicting that 9 million systems will need replacement in 2020, which is 500,000 more than last year!

Of course, if you have a new HVAC system, this doesn’t apply to you, but if you’ve got a 15-year-old system and have been putting off getting it checked, tuned up, etc., chances are you’re due for a replacement.
